August 11, 1957- “Conquering Self-Centeredness”

On this #MLKJrDay, I want to take the time to say thank you to this outspoken leader. Most people remember Dr. King for his “I Have a Dream” speech, the Letter from the Birmingham Jail, and the “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” Sermon. However, Dr. King accomplished so much more. As, I was traveling today, I thought about how King David wanted to build the temple for God. However, God rejected David’s request and told him that his son would build the temple, King Solomon. Instead of David getting angry and forgetting about his desire, he gathered the materials to build the temple and he found the location. All Solomon had to do was to build the temple. David laid the foundation for Solomon. Likewise, Dr. King laid the foundation for us. He showed us how to handle violent people through peace and non-violence. He gave us dream that we would not judge people based on their skin, but on the content of their character. He showed us how we could be free from economic injustice and free from racism and segregation. Dr. King laid a foundation of courage, service, and action for us to follow. The problem is we have strayed away from his model. We strive to serve on the 3rd Weekend in January, while neglecting service for the remainder of the year. As Martin Luther King, III has stated, “There is still more work to do.” We have to continue building on the foundation that Dr. King has laid. No matter how people try to tear us down, we have to keep building! The foundation will remain. We must build a skyscraper against racial injustice and economic injustice. One day this generation and generations yet to come, will complete the work that that Dr. King has started. One day, We Shall Overcome! Thank you Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for laying the foundation!
